Thyroidectomy consists of the partial or total removal of the thyroid gland, an endocrine gland (which produces hormones) located in the antero-inferior and middle part of the neck. This intervention can have several purposes:

- remove all or part of the gland due to its size and the risk of compression of neighboring structures
- prevent the occurrence of cancer in the event of a proven genetic risk (family background of multiple endocrine neoplasia)
